Fulton County is Georgia's largest populated county, and leads the state in per-capita income. The estimated population in 2003 was 818,322 people.

| Brief History: |
|
Georgia's 144th county was named after Robert Fulton, an inventor of the steamship. Fulton built the Clermont, a boat that revolutionized river travel, playing a vital role in the development of the South.
Fulton County was formed from DeKalb County in 1853. In 1932, Milton and Campbell counties were consolidated with Fulton County, resulting in its current elongated shape. |

Favorite tourist attractions include Underground Atlanta, the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, the World of Coca Cola Museum, the Botanical Gardens, the Carter Center, Fernbank Science Center and Zoo Atlanta.
The Georgial Capitol and the Governor's Mansion are both located in Atlanta.
Cultural attractions include the High Museum of Art, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Atlanta Ballet.
Other notable attractions include the CNN Center, the Herndon Home, and Centennial Olympic Park.
Fulton County is also the home of four professional athletic teams: the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Hawks, the Atlanta Falcons and the Atlanta Thrashers. Atlanta currently hosts the Collegiate Peach Bowl and the Peachtree Road Race, the world's largest 10K race.

Atlanta, the county seat and state capital was originally named Terminus in 1842. It was later changed to Marthasville before being named Atlanta in 1848. |
